Stewart/Owen Dance

This nationally renowned company, led by a husband-and-wife duo, brings an exciting collection of contemporary choreography that’s as “sensual” (Washington Post) as it is “humorous, elegant, and wild” (Seattle Dances). Working with writers, musicians and storytellers, these cross-genre collaborators cultivate the craft of storytelling through movement — even choreographing music videos for Moses Sumney, Sylvan Esso and Ben Phantom. Premiering in this performance is an all-new, exhilarating piece created just for the Wortham Center stage.

AMOR

Román de Jesús hopes that his choreographic work helps performers, viewers, and leaders dream without boundaries, a perfect mission for dance works that thrive on extremes. He explains, “I am excited to share not only the movement, but also the sound, lighting, sets, and costumes that transform a thought into magic. The dances are surreal, theatrical, poetic, dramatic, variegated roller coasters. I hope audiences will buckle into their seats, feel the rush of speeding downhill, brush back their windswept hair, and ache to ride again.”

Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt

Inspired by Kurt Vonnegut’s seminal novel Slaughterhouse Five, Sfeir’s latest work dares to explore the utility of destiny and the illusion of freewill, forging a distorted noir fantasy that is both deviantly chaotic and delightfully sentimental. “Everything Was Beautiful” investigates our culture’s obsession with storytelling in an unashamed, maximalist fashion and is set to an original score by Jesse Scheinin that melds psychedelic jazz and troubadour music stylings.

The program features dance artists James Barret, Rebecca Corrigan, Emma Lalor, Gabriella Sibeko, Ian Spring, Stephanie Terasaki, and Maddy Wright.

Location: LaGuardia Performing Arts Center - Long Island City, NY

you have to look through this to see me

MICHIYAYA’s new work you have to look through this to see me is a reimagination of intimacy and reclamation of femme and nonbinary sensuality. MICHIYAYA Dance processes the complexities of how we crave, sustain, and heal in relationship with one another as sensual beings. Without stigma from heteronormative sources, MICHIYAYA takes control of their dialogues in raw yet fanciful ways. It is a rewrite of how we belong together as our most authentic selves.

This new work is created by Artistic Directors Anya & Mitsuko Clarke-Verdery in collaboration with and featuring their five dance artists Alex Bittner, Bree Breeden, Joy Carlos, Alex Schmidt, and Alexandra Wood, with guest artist Gabriella Sibeko. It features an original score created by grammy-nominated Hip-hop recording artist and composer Billy Dean Thomas, and costume design by Bones, newly featured artist of hit series Project Runway.

95 poems

95 POEMS examines the works of EE Cummings as a world determined by the ideals in his work. Theater and dance merge to examine whether Cummings's ideals of nature, patriotism, and religion are still relevant in a plastic-choked, bitterly divided 21st century United States.

Though tickets are free, a suggested donation of $20 is encouraged to help support the performers and the work. Tax-deductible donations can be made here: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/tedted-performance-group
